Maybe you’ve just sent your youngest child off to college, or perhaps your big backyard is too much for you to handle—if either of these things is the case, it might be time for you to downsize.

Of course, these aren’t the only two reasons why you might want to move to a smaller home, but they do hint at the kinds of reasons one might make that transition. Today I’ll provide you with a list of additional reasons to consider downsizing:

1. Retirement. With both life expectancy and the cost of living rising, downsizing is a great option for retirees looking to stretch their retirement savings.

2. Anxiety. Whether your stress is caused by the continual upkeep of the home or by other factors like family members leaving, it might be time to move to a smaller home.

If you feel like your home is swallowing you whole and you have more space than you could easily use, it might be time to downsize.

3. Too much unused space. If you feel like your home is swallowing you whole and you have more space than you could easily use, it might be time to downsize. Unused rooms tend to collect things that add to the chaos of an overlarge home, and they also cost money to heat and cool.

4. Money opportunities. If your home has appreciated a lot and the money is for the taking, it might be time to take that equity and use it to buy a nice luxury apartment.
